There are three catagories of expectorant..These are relaxing, stimulating and amphoteric.
You would use a relaxing expectorant to reduce spasm in the airways and bronchial tubes, reducing constriction and widening the tubes. It would be administered to a dry, persistent, unproductive cough. It will liquify mucus and make it easier to remove from the lungs. Thyme is an example of a relaxant.
A stimulating expectorant would be used when there are large ammounts of mucous in the lungs and congestion, in conditions like bronchitis and general chesty coughs. Fenugreek is a stimulant.
An amphoretic would be suggested for a fluctuating cough. This is often a cough that is dry through the night but productive through the day. Elderower and garlic are amphoretic
