Herbal Medicine
Aromatic oils
From flowers, fruits leaves, bark, roots & resins. They have been used for centuries for their healing properties. This is a quick guide to the most popular & safe oils. Rosemary, Lavender & Geranium are good all rounders, if you are looking for a starting point.
The following oils should NOT be used during pregnancy...bay, basil, clary sage, comfrey, fennel, hyssop, juniper, marjoram, melissa, myrrh, rosemary, sage & thyme
Bella donna is antichologenic (blocks the neurotransmittor acetycholine). it is antispasmodic, antiasthmatic and anhidrotic (reduces sweating).
It is used for neuralgia, anxiety and panic attacks, hypersalivation, excessive sweating, IBS, hystamine mediated allergic reactions, motion sickness, gallbladder and renal colic.
The dosage of bella donna for twice a day for 5 days is spec 1:10, 45% tincture, using leaves and flowering tops. The maximum weekly dose is 10ml. 1ml twice a day for 5 days
Henbane is suitable for its application to stress related migraines that are causing nausea. It has analgesic action, it is antiemetic and is also a sedative so is therefore calming.
When skin integrity is compromised in cases such as eczema it is suggested that using a herb that is primarily astringent with a secondary microbial action would be most beneficial.
Broken or compromised skin is open to the risk of infection. If the skin is weepy or broken I suggest yarrow.
In cases of shingles it is desirable to chose a herb with an anti inflammatory primary action and a secondary action of supporting the nervous system. These are called anti inflammatory nervines. Three such herbs are St Johns wort, German chamomile and lime blossom.
Lily of the valley is a restricted herb which is a great heart remedy. It contains cardiac glycosides.
It has several theraputic actions. It is cardioactive, diuretic, antiarrythmic, it slows and strengthens heart contractions. It is used to treat congestive heart failure, arrythmia, cardiac asthma and odema due to heart problems.
It is standard for a herbalist to dose three times a day. Usually before or after the consumption of each main meal of the day.
This is not rigid dosing. There are times when it may be more desireable to dose twice a day, omitting the evening dose. This would be particularly relevent if the blend contains stimulating herbs, avoiding the evening dose will reduce the risk of suffering from insomnia from the stimulants.
If the blend was a relaxing blend, it may be desirable to avoid the morning dose to avoid tiredness being bothersome through the afternoon. The cumalative sedative effect should be sufficient to carry the patient through the morning without negative side effects.
There are some scenarios when a single potent dose a day is preferable. This would be applicable during an infection or when treating the gut.
Synergistic herbs are those that work in pairs. Each enhances the properties of the other. Given in combination the pairing becomes far more effective than using singularly.
One such synergistic pairing used to treat anxiety is the pairing of the nervines skullcap and passionflower.
Accelerator herbs boost the powers of the herbal blend by various mechanisms. Some promote the movement of active constituents from the digestive tract into the bloodstream. Improving the absorption action of the active constituents.
Others use an action whereby they stimulate the nervous and circulatory system. These accelerator herbs are known as diffusives. They include such herbs as angelica, bayberry, cayenne, cinnamon, echinacea, ginger, rosemary, wood betony.
An antispasmodic with a secondary diuretic action might be used if you need help with a urinary tract infection. It will be of importance to reduce pain from bladder spasms but also equally desirable to flush out the system.
If you are experiencing musculoskeletal issues. It will be desirable to reduce the painful muscles but there may also be an accumalation of fluid in the effected area.
A cleansing diuretic may be a good mechanism to apply if you are wishing to address underlying or sub health issues.
Herbs to use in these scenarios include parsley, wild carrot, celery seed and angelica.
Nervous system tonics are used when the nervous system is exhausted and needs tonic herbs.
This is a list of 8 nervous system tonics:
Oats,
St Johns wort
damiana,
valerian,
skullcap,
panax ginseng,
liquorice,
ashwagandha
The herb with an affinity for the female reproductive system is Ladys Mantle. It is particularly good for the pelvic floor.
3 primal alchemic properties and the plant constituents that represent them in a spagyric tincture are :
Sulfur -fire element, the soul of the plant represented by the plants volatile oils.
Mercury - water element, the spirit of the plant, captured by alcohol.
Salt - earth element, the body of the plant, represented by mineral salts of the plant contained in the plant ash.
1:3, 45% on a tincture bottle is the specication written as a ratio between the marc and menstraum. The percentage relates to the alcohol percentage.
The marc is the plant material used whilst the menstraum is the liquid used when making a tincture.
The double extraction method sees some or all of the water part of the menstraum replaced by either an infusion or decoction. It is good for herbs with water soluble active constituents ie tannins and polysaccharides.
The plant parts suited to an infused tincture are:
Barks
Rhizomes
Roots
Seeds
Some berries
Decocted tinctures are often used for medicinal mushrooms because the active theraputic compounds are best extracted in water, especially their long polysaccharides, which have immune system stimulating properties.
Medicinal mushrooms suitable for decoction are:
Birch polypore ,chaga, lions mane, reishi, shiitake, tukahoe and turkeytail.
Double extraction stops the polysaccharides from becoming damaged by the high percentage of alcohol needed to draw out the other constituents.
Preparing reishi mushrooms for a decoction tincture would follow these steps.
Chop mushrooms and dry the mushrooms on a hydrator or screen.
Powder the mushrooms using a food processor, a herb grinder or a pestle and mortar.
Put the dried mushrooms in a blender with the alcohol and give it a blast to increase the surface area for extracting the active constituents.
You may add glycerine to the mushroom menstraum mix, creating an emulsion - this will help keep the mushroom nicely suspended within and under the surface of the alcohol.
To prevent fermentation you should see a clear layer of fluid at the top of the covered plant material.
If using chopped, dried mushrooms its important to shake/agitate the jar daily to encourage the extraction of the active constituents.
Leave to seep for several weeks then strain.
The water soluble saccharides are added to the tincture at the final stage.
Diuretic action is acheived by inhibitting the reabsorption of water in the nephrons and by promoting blood flow to the kidneys.
Horsetail, parsley, hibiscus, caraway, dandelion, hawthorn and ginger are all diuretics.
The restricted herb lobelia has an affinity with the lungs. It is actively antiasthmatic, a respiratory stimulant, an expectorant, antispasmodic, emetic and its a nervine.
It can be used to treat asthma, bronchitis, spasmodic coughs and irritable coughs.
Ephedra can be used to help asthma. Before using ephedra, exercise caution if you have a a history of thyroid disease, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, enlarged prostate or problems passing urine. Do not use if you are using guanethidine for high blood pressure, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors or secale alkaloid derivitives.
Biitter herbs will normalise the appetite and may offer a soothing action to the digestive tract and liver. It will also contribute to regulating blood sugars.
wormwood, artichoke leaf, dandelion, yarrow, Oregon grape, goldenseal, chamomile, and horehound are all known as bitter herbs
Possible side effects linked to using datura tincture are nausea, vomitting, dizziness, dilated pupils, blurred vision and feeling giddy. If these effects are experienced, reduce the dose.
- Datura plants, also called Jimson weed or thornapples, are typically cultivated in modern times as a common garden plant due to their beautiful flowers. These plants are sometimes confused with Brugmansia plants, which are ornamental flowering plants sometimes called angel’s trumpets. The flowers on many Datura species are also trumpet-shaped, and they may be pink, white, yellow, or purple. When the flowering season is over, Datura produces capsule fruits covered in spines, thus the name thornapple. They have ornamental leaves, as well, and grow well in many temperate climates.
- All parts of Datura plants contain alkaloids, like scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine. D. stramonium is one of the more common Datura plants in the United States that is abused for recreational reasons. Hallucinations from consuming Datura can last for two days, and the side effects can range from uncomfortable to dangerous.
- Abusing Datura recreationally became popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, leading to an increase in reports of overdose and poisoning death. The chemicals found in most Datura species can cause uncomfortable side effects, hallucinations, unusual behavior, mood disorders, and overdose.
- Datura is the scientific name for a genus containing 9-12 species of flowering plants in the nightshade family, which have been used in magic or religious ritual in various places around the world for millennia. However, every part of this plant is toxic, and it leads to numerous unintentional poisoning deaths every year. Unfortunately, because this plant does lead to hallucinations and intoxication, it is also abused as a recreational drug – a practice that has led to overdose deaths.
The restricted herb used to address chronic skin conditions like eczema, is called chelidonium majus (Greater celandine) and it is of the poppy family.
Also used to treat cholecystitis, gallstones, spasms in the digestive tract, hapatitis and liver issues (especially congestion and inflammation).
Carminative herbs can help manage -
excessive flatulance
trapped wind
bloating
colic
gastric infections
diarrhoea
constipation
Irritable bowel syndrome
Nausea
Vomitting
Examples of carminative herbs are fennel, chamomile, peppermint, rosemary, ginger and lemon balm.
True emmenagogues are used when the body is withholding a period or when the period is erratic. It stimulates menstruation. They do not address the cause of the problem and these causes must be addressed.
These causes could be stress, most commonly poor nutrition / diet, excessive exercise or a hormone imbalance.
Five strong true emmenagogues are condurango, fever few, gentian, goldenseal and tansy.
An adaptogen may be used if nervines alone haven't been enough to support the body through its recovery period as a result of physical exhaustion, chronic illness, prolonged or unavoidable mental or physical stress.
If the adaptogen is overstimulating you will experience symptoms of headaches, feeling jittery and may have problems falling asleep.
Adaptogens should be started at low dose and slowly increased. Taking nervines alongside adaptogens will help encourage and maintain balance.
Nervines are herbs that support the nervous system. Skullcap, milky oat, Catnip and Chamomile are all mildly calming and stronger nervines include relaxants such as Valerian (Valeriana) and Hops (Humulus)
Ginseng (Panax ginseng), Eleuthercoccus senticoccus, borage, ashwagandha, wild yam, and licorice root are all adaptogens.
Child sleep issues
Stop stimulating foods and drinks from early afternoon.
Optimise nutrition
No food one to two hours before bed.
Follow a strict bedtime routine with a herbal bath.
Give a warm infusion 1 hour before bed.
Use long term herbal treatment of trophorestoratives ie oats, lime flowers, lemon balm and German chamomile.
Infant Colic
Dill, fennel, lemon balm, caraway, angelica, catnip, marshmallowleaves and flowers.
Dose ; 1ml dose before feed or use drops after feed.
Breast feeding mothers can drink 4 cups of the infusions. She may give herself drop doses before a feed.
Nervine herbs are used to help those suffering from stress and to prevent escalation of stressful symptoms.
Oats, valerian, vervain, skull cap, German chamomile, lemon balm, lime blossom, mugwort, wood betony are all nervines.
Relaxing antispasmodic herbs like lime flowers, wild yam and German chamomile are used to address tension, anxiety, tension headaches, migraines, digestive issues linked to stress like IBS, painful periods and insomnia.
Ginkgo is used to promote cerebral blood flow and is thought to help with the functions associated with this part of the brain. There are four lobes of the cerebral cortex -
Frontal lobe is responsible for speech, emotions, planning and problem solving, movement and reasoning.
Parietal lobe is involved in movement, orientation, stimuli perception and recognition.
Temporal lobe is involved in speech, memory, hearing and emotions.
Occipital lobe is involved in visual processing
Classes of herbs to treat Psoriasis
Alteratives - they support toxin elimination and normalise the metabolism
Lymphatics - these support the drainage of interstitial fluid in the skin and the immune system.
Diuretics - these support elimination via the kidneys
Psoralen herbs normalise skin function and promote healing.
Antioxidants protect skin and capillaries and manage inflammation.
Herbs to decrease skin cell production to prevent the over build up of skin cells.
Anti inflammatories ease pain, itching and calm contributing issues.
Trophorestoratives and nervines help relieve the triggers for stressors and traumas.
Diaphoretics and circulatory stimulants can help bring toxins up and out of the skin.
Immune herbs to help boost skin immunity.
Acne
Alterative herbs may be used, as they address toxins and imbalances, promoting elimination.
Bitter alteratives encourage elimination through the bowels and diuretics will help flush the bladder, kidneys, urinary system of toxins.
Good herbs to use are dandelion, yellow dock, burdock roots, fumitory and mugwort.
Comfrey promotes rapid healing. Do not use on deep wounds - the top layer of skin could heal too quickly, trapping infection underneath in a pocket, which could cause an abcess.
Mucilages in herbs are the active constituent that are used an scaley, cracked skin or on skin that is rough, irritated, hot and inflamed.
They will soothe, cool, reduce inflammation and create a barrier. A suggestion would be marshmallow root.
These herbs stop itching. They are most effectively applied in a base of water, in a bath, via a cold compress or as a mist sprayed over the effected, itchy area. During the day a cream may be more convenient. Chickweed, witch hazel, marigold, st johns wort.
The hormones secreted by the pituitary gland are -
growth hormone
prolactin
thyroid stimulating hormone
gonadtrophic hormones
adrenocorticotrophic hormones
melanocyte stimulating hormone
The thyroid is situated at the front of the neck, just beneath the larynx. The gland is winged sitting each side of the isthmus which lies across the throat. It secretes thyroxin and triiodothyronine. These stimulate the metabolic rate in cells and stimulate growth.
It also releases calcitonin which brings about a reduction of calcium in the blood.
Adrenal Glands - The medulla secretes adrenalin and noradrenaline. These are primarily involved in the fight or flight response.
The cortex secretes steroid hormones called glutocorticoids - cortisone is involved in glucose, protein and fat metabolism. Ensuring the mobilization of energy stores and ensuring that glucose needs are satisfied.
They also depress inflammatory and immune reponses by diverting energy away from the process.
The cortex also secretes minerals/corticoids like aldesterone for water and sodium - re uptake in the nephrons.
The adrenal glands also secrete androgens. These are male sex hormones. Post menopausal women convert androgens to estrogens, so if there is breast cancer or an estrogen fed disease, its important not to stimulate the adrenals.
When facing a stressor, adrenaline stimulates the fight or flight response.
Breathing quickens, and blood is moved from around the body to the brain and musculoskeletal system.
The heart rate increases leading to a rise in blood pressure. This process makes the eyes dilate and sharpens our vision.
When dealing with prolonged stress the body releases adrenocorticotrophic hormone . ACTH is secreted from the pituitary gland which tells the adrenal cortex to release cortisol which dampens the inflammatory/healing response.
The pancreas is an endocrine gland. It has a group of cells called the islets of Langerhan, which secrete the hormones insulin, glucogen and somatostatin into the blood stream. It is involved in the regulating of blood sugar levels.
Insulin lowers it, glucogen raises it by stimulating the liver. Somatostatin decreases the activity of both insulin and glucogen.
To stimulate the production of thyroid hormones use
Bladderwrack,
Guggel
Forskohlii
Therapeutic actions required when managing hyperthyroidism -
Trophorestorative / nervous system tonics like st Johns wort
Relaxants like bugleweed
Anxiolytics like passion flower
Immunomodulators like echinacea
Hypnotics like valerian
Cardiovascular tonics like motherwort / garlic
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Try the tonics - St Johns wort, liquorice, oat straw, damiana, fenugreek, vervain,
Allergies
Use adaptogens to help promote a healthy balanced immune system and guard against allergic reactions ie liquorice.
They support the digestive system, addressing disbiosis and leaky gut related issues. Ginger or gut healing herbs are started at an initially high dose.
To inhibit a hystamine response anti allergenic herbs are suggested. Nettles are a good herb to use for long term control.
Anti inflammatories, lymphatics, decongestants and anticatarrhals can be used to help calm a reaction that has occurred
Antimicrobial herbs which could be used to manage an infection -
Digestive system - cayenne and garlic
Urinary system - parsley and yarrow
Female reproductive system marigold and pau d'arco
Skin system - poke root and myrrh
Respiratory system - elderberry and mullein.
Immunostimulant herbs work by helping to launch an immune response. They are short acting and dont fundamentally change the immune system.
They are good for fighting off infection.
With people who are immunocompromised, where even a common cold can have serious implications, it can help ward off infection, leaving you free to work on the cause of the debility.
If you are struggling to enter a period of recovery, it can help break the cycle of infection, facilitating healing. Garlic is useful in these circumstances.
Other immunomodulators are -
Astragulus
Echinacea
Ashwagandha
What is fibromyalgia?
It is thought to be a neurological imbalance and a pain processing issue.
It is often linked to a specific event or trauma. Commonly it can be an operation, illness an injury, pregnancy, bereavement or the end of a relationship.
Adaptogens are useful as the body is under extreme stress, both mentally and physically.
Use ashwagandha, panax, ginseng, astragulus and shiitake
Potential triggers for gout are physical trauma, fatigue, stress and other heightened emotions, excessive alcohol consumption, lots of purine rich foods, surgery, infection, exposure to lead and incidence within the family.
Approach gout by chosing herbs with these actions:
Diuretics - dandelion leaf, wild carrot.
Anti inflammatories - ginger, meadow sweet
Lymphatics - cleavers, marigold
Analgesics - valerian, passion flower
Cooling compress - lavender and peppermint or ointment
Low purine diet, alcohol reduction, increase water intake and plenty of raw vegetables
Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include inflammation of the joints and connective tissue. It is an autoimmune condition.
It causes hot, sore, aching joints, stiffness - leading to immobility. Nodules appear around effected joints and there is often symmetrical joint involvement.
Pain is usually worse in the morning, easing as the day progresses. It can cause mild fevers, long term fatigue and difficulty with sleeping.
Blood work will reveal the presence of antibody rheumatoid factor and severe inflammation can occur in the synovial membrane.
This inflammation can be long standing and recurrent leading to damage to the joint and its surrounding structures.
This damage can extend to other organs such as the lungs, the heart and the skin.
To manage rheumatoid arthritis the actions employed are anti rheumatic, anti inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, alterative, diuretics, nervines, hypnotics, adaptogens, immune support and a demulcent if any digestive upset is experienced. If there is a problem with fatigue introduce nutritives adaptogens and hypnotics. Demulcents are used to calm digestive issues many anti rheumatics with long term use or at high dose can upset the tummy. the worst culprits appear to be bogbean and guaiac.
The two main herbs for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are saw palmetto and nettle root.
They reduce the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone by inhibitting the enzymes involved in the conversion.
In cases of endometriosis restricted herbs may be considered to address extreme pain. Belladonna, henbane, datura, and yellow jasmine may be given only occassionally.
Uterine astringents will help address heavy bleeding. Ladys mantle, yarrow, agrimony, rehmannia and bayberry are useful but always use nutritives like oatstraw and alfalfa alongside the astringents as the body is already depleted.
To tonify the uterus a blend using raspberry leaf and nettle could be offered.
PMS-C is a premenstrual syndrome but the "C" stands for craving. This is characterized by increased apetite, a craving for sugar and carbs, headaches, palpitations, low blood sugars, low prostaglandins, dizziness and tiredness.
Balancing blood sugars is an important task with this condition and you should eat small regular meals and consider ingesting complex carbs.
Some useful hormone normalisers often used in cases of PMS are agnus castus, black cohosh, shatavari, liquorice, wild yam and dong quai.
Nettle seed may be used for PMS because it is an adaptogen. it is used for severe stress and it has a nourishing approach. It should only be taken in the morning so it doesnt cause insomnia.
For painful periods, use antispasmodics to reduce cramping, herbs that lower prostoglandin production, herbs that support estrogen production, hormone normalizers, nervines, analgesics and uterine tonics. The common weed white dead nettle is considered specic for dysmenorrhoea.
Cystitis causes frequent, painful urination and a sensation of bladder fullness even after it has been emptied. There may be a strong odour and maybe blood in the urine. The sufferer may experience pain or aching in the back and legs.
Use antimicrobials and urinary antiseptics, anti inflammatories, antispasmodics, diuretics and astringents.
To treat hayfever I would suggest anti allergy herbs like nettles. Nettles work on most cells.
Anti catarrhals and decongestant herbs like elderflower to reduce the secretions.
Lymphatic herbs like marigold will help clear congestion around the mucous membranes.
The introduction of nervines like German chamomile is a good idea to assist stress, but it is also anti allergic and anti inflammatory.
Sundew is particularly useful for spasmodic coughs or to ease the pain caused from coughing.
It is recommended for whooping cough because as well as being antispasmodic, it is a demulcent. It has soothing mucilages and it is an expectorant.
When applied to sore throats, these herbs have specific therapeutic actions.
Cleavers is a lymphatic herb, it is good for tonsils and sore throats.
Sage is an anti inflammatory, astringent herb, it is advised to gargle it.
Myrrh has aneasthetic properties so is good for numbing the throat.
Liquorice is anti inflammatory and astringent.
Marshmallow root is a demulcent herb, it coats the membranes and brings about soothing.
Echinacea has anti inflammatory actions and astringent. It is a useful immunostimulator for the upper respiratory tract.
The theraputic actions important when considering a herbal strategy for managing the pain of sinusitis include: anticatarrhals and decongestants like pine or thyme, anti inflammatory herbs like meadow sweet to ease fluid congestion. Analgesics such as German chamomile or meadow sweet (california poppy can be given short term). Also nervines like lemon balm may help calm a stressed system and help reduce pain.
At the beginning of a flu infection the body may develop a fever. The body produces a fever as an immune response to the infection. Once it has detected the microbe, the hypothalmus turns up the bodys thermostat and increases the bodys temperature. This may cause the patient to feel cold and shivery as blood is pumped from the peripherals to the core of the body to heat it up.
As the peripheral vessels constrict to divert the blood for heat, it causes the patient to become pale.
The heat will create an inhospitable environment for the pathogen, inhibitting it from reproducing. The heating process also liquifies the mucous of the mucous membranes which encourages the expulsion from the body of the microbes.
Though the heat stimulates the immune system, it is not safe for the body to be heated for prolonged periods. In response to this, as the fever progresses, sweating occurs to cool the body down. The peripheral vessels dilate allowing blood to come to the surface and cool the body. This sweating process, the removal of toxins, is the point where the phrase "the fever is breaking" is applied.
If someone already debilitated contracts the flu, use echinacea as the immunostimulant of choice. Others that may be used to a lesser effect are garlic and thyme
If someone is suffering from emphysema, we see damage to the structure of the alveoli. It is neccessary to encourage the repair of these structures.
The structure of a healthy alveoli consists of two types of cell.
Type1 alveolar cells and Type 2 alveolar cells.
Type1 cells are at the site responsible for gas exchange.
Type 2 cells are known as septal cells. These secrete alveolar fluid, its function is to prevent the alveoli from collapsing.
Phagocytes protect the alveoli by dealing with any particles that may succeed in reaching into the structure of the lungs.
The process of breathing involves using muscles. The muscles involved in this mechanism are the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles. This is known as pulmonary ventilation.
There are restricted herbs that can be used during a spasmodic cough - these are ephedra, lobelia, belladonna and datura.
Marshmallow root, liquorice, plantain and mullein are examples of soothing demulcent expectorants.
They are introduced to address dry, non productive, irritating coughs, or when there is wheezing or inflammation of the respiratory tract. It is suitable to give to children.
The way herbalists approach haemorrhoids is to address the issue as both external and internal.
Mucilages like psyllium seeds can help ease the passage of faeces and bitters introduced if constipation is a problem.
Venous tonics are introduced as part of the internal approach using herbs like garlic and elderberry.
Astringents can be used but ensure they do not interfere with existing constipation issues. Safe herbs to use are wild rose, agrimony and marigold.
Externally astringents and applying venous tonics can be benecial in reducing pain. Use herbs like horse chestnut and witch hazel.
German chamomile is an anti inflammatory with vulnerary properties. If you would like a soothing external preparation blends using lavender, plantain or chickweed are suitable.
Anti allergy herbs that may be used to help manage food intolerances are calming healing herbs such as marigold, agrimony and meadow sweet
Herbs used in supporting people with inflammatory bowel disease for their influence on the immune or lymphatic system are immunomodulators.
These include echinacea, astragulus, shiitake, plantain, baikal skullcap, ashwagandha. Garlic is an important immunomodulator.
Cleavers is suggested as a marvelous tonic.
If the mucosa is damaged and there is risk of infection it is prudent to introduce antimicrobials like yarrow or German chamomile into the blend.
IBS is an immune disorder so it is necessary to support the immune system.
The antacid herb I favour is meadow sweet, which encourages the regulation of stomach acid rather than just supressing the symptoms
Theraputic herbs used to treat IBS are blends including:
Antispasmodics like german chamomile.
Astringents to address over production of mucous using herbs such as meadow sweet.
Anti inflammatory herbs such as wild yam.
Nervines and sedatives like german chamomile to calm stress.
Immune system herbs like garlic to deal with dysbiosis, especially if there is a link to previous infections.
Carminatives like cinnamon could be used for in the moment support in helping to ease the symptoms.
Laxatives, gentle action is best utilised unless consipation is an issue. If the stronger laxative yellow dock is used it is best to support with a carminative to speed up the process and to assist with pain relief.
There are universal herbs used to treat IBS. These are german chamomile, peppermint and thyme.
To reeducate a sluggish bowel a long term strategy is neccesary. Bitter and hepatic herbs such as dandelion root and milk thistle are introduced to support the liver and to help improve the overall function of the digestive system.
Carminative antispasmodics like cramp bark may be used to normalise the peristalsis in the large intestine. This should aid with the griping pain.
Bulk laxatives such as psyllium seeds can help get things moving if the bowel is sluggish.
If a stronger laxative is needed the bitter laxative yellow dock would be a preferred choice. The continued use of bitter herbs will help restore normal function long term.
If the lower digestive tract requires soothing and healing, use a soothing demulcent decoction of marigold, liquorice or agrimony.
Diarrhoea can be triggered by infection including parasitic, as a protective response to flush out inflammation caused by the infection.
Poorly digested food can irritate the gut and cause diarrhoea, along with food allergy / intolerance, intestinal disease, food poisoning, functional disorders, medication, worry and anxiety.
Leaky gut syndrome is caused by damage to the intestinal lining, which allows large molecules like proteins, to cross through the epithileum of the intestine whole. They squeeze out through gaps and enter into the blood stream. The body detects these as foreign invaders in the body and triggers an immune response.
Symptoms include long term fatigue and systemic inflammation. Following protocols to support food allergies and intolerances and IBS often help people suffering with leaky gut syndrome.
Bitter herbs are used for addressing many problems within the digestive system. These problems include poor digestion, loss of apetite, liver issues, food allergies/intolerances, gastritis and to help with blood sugar stability problems. Dandelion root, gentian and centaury are examples of bitters
In cases of low mood and anxiety you may wish to work on the digestive system, as the digestive system is one of the bodies sites that produce serotonin.
Based on knowing serotonins are produced here, and knowing serotonins influence mood / anxiety, it is likely that disruption to the digestive system will have an effect on this mood / anxiety neuro transmitter.
Let’s talk about that often well disguised problem of depression...there are many aspects of depression that are caused through poor nutrition.. in the least we can use foods to improve overall mood health. Low folic acid contributes to depression, a simple boost is to eat asparagus. Vitamin B deficiency can lead to depression. Eating eggs including the yolk will boost B Vits and improve brain function. Magnesium deficiency is mood altering so eat nuts and seeds. These will produce seratonins in your body, a natural feel good chemical. Omega 3 is known as brain food. It has been proven to increase grey matter in mood related parts of the brain. People suffering with depression have been proven to have less grey matter in these regions. Green tea contains the amino acid L- theanine which has a calming effect. Altered blood sugars can effect mood stability but eating protein and whole grain can balance blood sugars. If you prefer to supplement here are a few that can help.. SAMe.. 5-HTP.. B6..Vit D.. Omega3..Johns Wort...Ginko.. Saffron
